got a 68 472 out of a coupe deville that i picked up about a year ago for an old rock crawler project of mine that i never got around to using and sold/parted out the truck over the summer and cant think of anything to put it in for the time being so shes just collecting dust on an engine stand in the garage right now an the guys on my 4x4 forums just dont seem that interested in it so just dropped buy to let you guys have a shot at it
was running great with a bottom end knock from a crank baring gone bad im my buddys cd but instead of rebuilding it he forked up the $$$ for a long block assem. from one one the vender's here and gave me this one for my project for getting it out and ready for the new one to go in.
as soon as i got it home i tore it down for an inspection to rebuild it to find the #4 main baring too be bad as known so needs the crank reground or a new one. no scoring of the cylinders or any cracks or any thing out of the blue. no bent valves in the heads witch are still together.
a.w- tore her down to the bare block, sprayed her down with cleaner, boxed up all the parts and never to be touched since
my buddy sells complete sbc cores for rebuild for $250 so i think $350 is a good starting point-no distr. altt ps pump or carb as well as any asso. brackets
also sitting on new pep boys big red jack $150 1500lb deluxe engine stand since i got it and will let it go with it for $50 extra if i get what im looking for it other than that ill keep it for my next project.
thx-hunter- email me for pics

Most forum member are used to paying ~$300 for a running 500, often including the long trail THM-400 from the car.
Unlikely to get $350 for a '68 block and a 472 crank that needs work. The '68 block needs work to handle the stroke of a 500, which is what 90% of the people here are after.
Good luck, but I doubt you get more than $200 for it, probably less than $100.

well thanks for the info tweety bird- well lets just say best offer . if i cant get more than $200 for it ive got a few guys that have offered me around that in cash or trade already so if it doesn't go by the end of the month here it will go to one of them for sure so no big deal
300 for a running 500 with transe-my bud forked out like $3500 for the remain (not a stroked out or built up one) he got to replace it granted it came with the heads, thats just sounds like a hard deal to nail but hey good for you. i sold the orig. 400sbc that cam out of the truck for almost $300 easy and it was knocking spitting smokeing leaking and a remainned onne woulld prroobbly go for likke $1k so that just sounds funny to me
best offer

Well you better go find those guys that offered you cash because I highly doubt that you will get that much either. I bought a 1970 472 running with transmission for 200 bucks and a 1969 472 running with transmission for 200 bucks. Those were running motors that didnt need a rebuild. Good luck but I highly suggest you dont let your buddies that are offering you cash get a way because otherwise your going to be stuck with parts for a long time at that price. Otherwise you might want to part it out and put it on ebay. Still doubt you will get much over 100 bucks. Good luck though.

its been disassembled to be built up! not some junk yard motor to go in your old clunker- all the factory crap this thing has on it is junk in a real motor heads mind i.e. the intake and exhaust manifold-junk, the crank and camshaft- junk- rods -junk -heads almost 100bls of junk!! not some temp solution for granny's rooting old stinky sinking boat!!!!!
thanks for the tip old man -this motors is a verified 60k mile block that was owned buy a good friend on mines grand father (since new) that past away and left him his babied cd- the block has been all checked out by a local machine shop and all it needs is a decking and time in a hot tank for peace of mind!- the honing marks are amazing- doesn't even need it i was told.
anyway, any local guys that could of used this motor to build on can thank your buddy here for being cheap and rude b/c i just got off the phone with the friend i got it from and he still has the crate and return s/h info to send back a core for atleast $200 so dropping her off tomorrow just to avoid the hagglers-thx

So long.
You obviously don't know anything about these engines.
500HP and 600ft-lbs easily doable with all the stock "junk"
(ok a little less for the 472).
Glad you got some cash. Have for with the small blocks or 4 bangers (which ever is you preference).

Who are you calling an old man? I bet i'm half your age you dumbass. And as far as you saying the cranks are junk that just shows you really dont know shit. You cant buy aftermarket cranks. Aftermarket cranks really arent even needed the stock cranks are strong as fuck. Likely story to how you have people just waiting at your door for a torn down 472 for $350. You were the one that was rude. You started being an asshole after STDog was trying to give you some advice so you didnt end up sitting on the motor with no one buying it.

Who you calling old man???
this motors is a verified 60k mile block that
That need the crank ground, an who know what else since it was knocking.

My 100k mile 472 still had hone marks visible. Not uncommon on these blocks. They are very high nickel, and wear extremely well. Too bad it was mistreated. And it had to have been to have been mistreated to loose a main bearing at 60k.
Shouldn't need decked either. Again, normally just a light resurfacing, as they tend not top warp. My 472 just needed the old gasket removed form the block and head (scotch brite)

sell it to one of your friends if they're dumb enough to buy it for that price. trust me, i've been given two 500s. these motors are a dime a dozen. btw, i have a 400 shot on my 73 deville (500 swap). find another stock crank to handle that abuse
