Can anyone tell me the procedure of changing cam bearings in a "500" with the crank still in?

Good luck. There's a tool for R/R on the bearing you'll need. But lining up the oil passages will be hard.

If the engine is out of the vehicle, why not just take the crank out? You can do that without removing the pistons/heads.

What would be the procedure of taking the crank out? Is there anything that should be replaced when taking the rods and main caps loose?

Frist, I suggest getting a copy of the cadillac shop manual for your year. Great stuff in there. Everything a GM mechanic would have used on to service a Cadillac.

If the cam bearings are worn, might as well change the main and rods while you have the engine torn down. Either way, bearings should be checked with plastigage. to check their wear.

If you have the cam out all you'll need to do is disconnet the rods, bush the to the top of the cylinder, and remove the main caps. Crank should lift out.

If the engine is still in the car you can't change the cam bearings without dropping the tranny and removing the flexplate.

I had an engine builder friend look at the bearings and he suggested that they were fine. Thanks for the advice everyone.
