What is the stock pin height on a stock 500 piston.

Here you go, I hopes this helps.

Big_Boyz_Toyz,
1.910", iirc.

Thanks for the useful link.

Miles/All,
Realize that most aftermarket pistons are normally 10-20 thou shorter than oem pistons. Note that the silvolites are 1.882"/1.883", whereas the KBs are 1.900", which is the tallest non-oem that I've seen. The oem 500s that I measured were 1.910", iirc.

Dave,
Yes, I have noted the difference in comp. ht. between manufacturers..not comparing them to 'stock' since I am not going back to stock..but it would make a difference in compression for sure..thanks for the reminder. Your willingness to share your knowledge is also appreciated.

Miles,
Thanks. Esp when using the thicker Cortecos, a taller pistons would help.
The piston down the hole will make the engine ping prone. Most experts say that quench in the 60-100 thou range is very bad. Even with oem pistons and thinner Felpros, the block will need a little whacking.

Dave,
What would you feel is a safe minimum quench dimension piston top to head regardless of the gasket used ? 5000 rpm max, 7" Olds rod , forged piston w/28.5cc dish, small chamber head.
Thanks

Don't want to answer for Dave, but I would say .035" as a min.
I'm building a motor now with Corteco's and I left the piston .003 out of the hole. Should have clearance to the head around .047"
I'll probably spin this to 5500-5800

Andy/Miles,
I agree that .035" should be safe, but fwiw, I'd shoot for .040"-.045".
Some experts claim that a too tight quench can cause quarks in the combustion process too. On the other hand, I'd much rather have .035" than .075".

Hey Dave...
What's a "quark"? I don't know if I want 'em in my combustion process......
Terry
I don't know what a quark is...
but I once worked with a carpenter from Boston once, who liked to round everything off to the nearest qwata.

Hey Dave...
What's a "quark"?
Aren't the sub-atomic particles of some sort...

I'm inclined to go with sub-atomic particle.. Google will know where to go to know fersur..

Wow. Dave B., I'm empressed. I thought for sure that Quark was a bar owner on the prominade deck of Deep Space Nine. I thought I had edumaction, hmm.. eddukation hmm.. edifkation hmm...oh hell, some good learnin', but, I missed that one.

Hi Terry,
Maybe is querk, or "weird thing that happens".
Sort of unexplained phenominom [sp?]. Part science, part black magic. If a bad quark occurs, the engine can become FUBAR, a bad thing. <grin

Ahhh,yes....."Quirk" :D
I knew that's what you meant but just thought I might stir up a bit of trouble. As usual, the inquiring minds of CB7 did not disappoint! We even left the galaxy for a moment.... :!:

Hi Terry,
LOL. Yes, there are some fart smellers here.
Actually, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "quark". I bet that one would probably cause the engine to be fubar quicker than a quirk.
Btw - encarta says: quirk = odd event.
