Hello Everyone,
First time to post on the new board. My question pertains to the stock intake off the 368 engines. They where made of aluminum so the question is can they be ported out enough to feed a 500? Im limited in the height so the eldenbrock is out.But I need the weight savings. It seems Al said they would fit but if they cant be ported out enough I wont go that way and just stick with the stock(HEAVY) cast intake. Any one know how much thet can be ported?
Thanks
Richard

The 368 intake will physically fit, but because of much smaller ports in the intake the overlap of the flange is marginal at best. If you try to portmatch to the 500 heads you will have an overlap paper thin. The breathing will be limited to low RPM only because of the smaller ports.
I had all three intakes, 368, 425, and the 500 at one time and did close measuring. Sold the 368 because it is useful on the 425 and 368 only.

I was curious about 368 intakes also. And like richie I am interested in weight savings but dont have room for an edelbrock. You say they may be useful on a 425 and thats where I would like to use the one I have. But come to think of it mine is off a fuel injected 82 DeVille. Got any ideas?

From looking at different pictures of the edelbrock, there might be enough material to machine some off of the carb mount area? Maybe enough to get it close to the stocker, or at least enought to close the hood!

Mine should be showing up in a few days, I'll know more with item in hand.

Manifold is here - looks like there is not much to be machined off of the carb pad.

Edelbrock no can be modified for clearance of hood, grashopper.

Thanks DV8. I thought your idea was a good one. But when I started looking @ of pictures of the Edelbrock it looked like the carb deck was a bit too thin in the front to machine much off of it. But hey, an inch here, an inch there, it all adds up!!
Now the good news. When I was looking @ the Edelbrock on Summits site there is a installation PDF. It tells you to do the obvious, put some clay on your air cleaner top and close the hood!! Dang, I wish I would have thought of that one myself. And I know the Edelbrock is the way to go for what I am doing. But I still want to know about putting the 368 manifold on a 425. Have you ever done it?? I have always been the guy to put someting where it isnt supposed to go just to see what will happen. Thanks again.

Supposedly, the Edelbrock will work on 425's and makes a nice replacement. Also, the FI (fuel-injection) 425 and 500 intakes are the same. Partly because of this, I think the 425 carbureted intake is very similar if not the same as the 472/500 intake.
Besides cast iron 472/500 intakes, I have a cast iron 425 intake along with aluminum 4bbl and TBI 368 intakes. The idea of using a carbureted 368 intake, at least on a 425, has crossed my mind. I was looking into using a V8-6-4 system on a 425 (I stripped two systems, wiring and computers from 368's) with a squarebore 4 bbl type TBI (using a squarebore to spreadbore-i.e. "Quadrajet"- adapter) instead of the typical GM two hole system (stock on the V8-6-4 368). I wanted a little more power than a 368, but not necessarily as much as a 472/500 for my winter car. Since I don't need or can't use a lot of power on wintery roads, economy would be more important. If the 368 intake would work (abeit with porting at least close to matching the 425 intake ports), would the 4bbl single plane design be more efficient/driveable than the GM TBI two hole system?

the 368 intake will fit but the port is a lot smaller on the 368 intake and you need to watch the seal at the top of the port .... I used a gasket that I hand cut to help it seal ... even with port work the intake runner flowed like 174 cfm at 28 inchs which is about the same as a stock 500 head .... and ran the same as the edebrock .... but the ported 368 intake had a lot better off idle and cruse fuel distrbution ..... so I gave it the name "truck intake " becouse I thought it was a good low rpm intake for use in a driver truck ...

Does anyone make an aluminum intake which allows you to retain the A/C?

Hi,ANDY! My name is Rick. I'm pretty new on this forum and wanted to reply to the subject of intakes. I really wish the aftermarket in genral would wake up concerning the potential of these engines! I personally do NOT know of aany manufacturer that makes anything that would allow those of us who want tire-burning torque AND be able to keep our cool in our ride seem to be S.O.L. I personally want to contact someone like Offenhauser and talk real candidly about such an intake. I have to stay with the good ole iron horse intake myself due to hood clearance considerations as well as needing the factory A/C system. Rick. If you want to email me my address is [email protected]. :D

The Edlebrock intake CAN be used with air conditioning if you switch to a newer Sanden compressor and convert to r134a refrigerant. You would have to make a new rear bracket or get one from Al @ MTS, but why not do it and have an upgraded system? The best of both worlds, comfort and power!

FWIW I have modified the brackets to run the factory pancake AC unit on my G-body with the Edelbrock. I think Joel had/has pics of the same setup on his El Camino in cowboyseven's pics area.

If the Edelbrock for sure won't fit, you can modify the stock intake.

Got to www.500caddy.us and at the left click on "Manifold". Tests prove that when that divider is cut out it comes pretty damn close to the Edelbrock. Plus, you don't have to worry about the compressor business.
