Hey guys. I plan to paint my engine pretty soon when it is all finished up. I want to paint the transmission as well. Is there anything special I have to do to it, it being aluminum? Wait...it IS aluminum, right?

What trans? What makes you thinl it aluminum?

Well it looks aluminum and although it has barely any paint left it isn't rusty at all. It says Hydromatic on it.
I don't know anything about the transmissions on these things. Is it not aluminum?

Here's (http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/th400.htm) a quick blurb I found on the TH400 (I guess you're talking about you '76 Cad)
From that site, TH-350s and TH400s (and their derivitives) have AL cases.
So as far as painting goes, a good degreaser should be enough and then use a high temp engine paint, as the trans gets quite warm in use.

Alright, thanks. Just didn't know if there was any special prepping, etc. that I should do.
However, my transmission is FWD, and the Th-400 appears to be RWD...am I missing something here?

The FWD, TH-425 trans is a derivitive of the RWD, TH-400 trans. Basicaly folded in half and the differential added.

Okay, TH-425...thats it. So nothing needed to be done to the aluminum but make sure its clean... that's good to hear.
