I tore down my 472 that I gor from the junkyard and noticed that a few of the cylinder walls were rusted up. I looked and didnt see any pitting it looked like the metal just bubbled a little bit. When I tore down the whole motor I noticed the pistons said.030 on them so it looks like it had been rebuilt before. What do you guys think? Does it look like I am going to have to bore it out or get a way with honing it? Thanks - Justin

I would bore it out if I were you just to be safe. Especially if it is bubbled up in some places.

Would anyone know where I could find a set of .060 over pistons for a 472 that are in good used condition? I have about 200 bucks to work with on the pistons. What do you guys think? Thanks - Justin

I also vote for boring it, if it's possible. Al may have some 472 pistons, or there was a guy selling the high-compression ones on Ebay that weren't much over $200, but I didn't think that he made it clear which year engines they fit (which heads).

You might be able to get away with .010" (.040")...
.030", .040" and .060" are common overbores

I would go with the .020 or so, or maybe .030 even. It's really easy to find pistons if you do. Also, if you ever need to rebuild after a while, you can bore it again and not have to use filler, etc or get a new block or whatever.

It's always good to plan ahead, no matter how far ahead it is!

Good luck on your project
