Where can I get a new (or used) timing marker for my 500?

Looks great, thanks.

I know I am a newb but will that still be accurate/work/whatever if the engine is bore .030 over or so?

It will work fine as long as the person who machined it placed the timing marks on the face properly. Which I am sure they did. The timing is based on the piston position in degrees before TDC (top dead center) and not the piston diameter, so you will be fine. Here is a link with some additional info. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't be so sure?

There are several pulley & timing marker combo's.

You might want to sit down & compose a short list of questions. Then call Al at MTS for some answers.

I know you were looking for a timing marker, but if you want a down and dirty way to set your timing, you can use a vacuum gauge attached to the intake manifold and advance your timing for the highest reading, then retard 1 in.

Do not mix timing tab with a different pulley. Marks are not the same.
If you have to mix you must locate true TDC with a cam degree wheel and make a new zero mark on pulley.

What if I am using the original pulley?

terrible one,

Do what Al says,
Mount your timeing tab, then bring the number one piston to true top dead center. Look at the timing tab to see if the groove on the pulley lines up with the zero mark on the tab. If it DOES NOT then file a new groove or mark on the pulley that lines up with the zero mark on the tab. Now when the groove on the pulley (old one or newly made one) lines up with the zero mark on the tab the engine will always be at top dead center.

Let's all go out on a limb and assume this guy on ebay made this part for a stock 472/500.

What year?

One more time.

There are several pulley & marker combo's. Got it?

Hey JM

Did I do something to you, or do you attack people for the hell of it?

Yeah JM don't be so harsh, I appreciate everyone helping me out and I respect everyones opinions.

I figured that timing marker would be made for the stock cad 472/500 as well. I didn't know that there were different pulley/marker combos for each year, or at least I didn't think of it.

The engine isn't done at the machine shop yet. So I called up there and asked about it. He is going to make his own timing tab.

Thanks for all of the help everyone. Pretty soon we will get to the Megasquirt fuel injection setup!

You've had two people advise you that there are certain timing markers for certain pulleys.

One who not only owns this board, but also owns a Cadillac parts store & yet you still don't listen to the answer.

It's your money.

JM,

I am the one that was wrong, but you are the one that was rude. I misunderstood and thought that the posts were referring to aftermarket pulleys and that all 472/500 stock engines had the same timing tab since they all had the same block. I learned something, and maybe some other people did too. That is what a forum is about. We are all here because we love cars. I don't know why you took my post personally, but if I offended you, I certainly did not mean to.

Terrible One,

Let me know how the Megasquirt goes. I have the same engine as you do, and I was thinking of building one as well. I am debating if the advantages would be worth the cost and trouble in my case.

Alright, no problem. I'm really looking forward to it. I am thinking that it will be worth it because of the many advantages. No flat spots in the RPM range, improved gas mileage, etc etc.

We are trying to reach 450 horses (might sound a bit weak, but this engine is going to be in the original cadillac body and will run on pump gas)

I'll take pictures of the modified intake and the reast of the system, etc when it is done to help you out a bit if needed. I'm really looking forward to setting the system up and testing it, etc. as I am really into computers.
