My motor was rebuilt about 6 years ago. I'm not sure if the timing chain was replaced by the previous owner, But im tearing it down for a cleaning and painting and i noticed that there is a good amount of slack in the chain.

Is this normal, what amount of deflection is tolerant.

I know a 3 peice combo is about 40 bucks. But I dont want to wait for the part to come in and find that there is still this much slack even with the new part.

The replacment cheap sets are not worth putting in.. as you can see after a short time they have way too much slop.. Just spend the money and get the roller chain set-up, and you will be happy you did... they are about $100

I bet thats what happend, I would hate to think someone wouldn't change that out while rebuilding the block.

I agree with Dave 100%....definitly go with a quality set like the Cloyes as the bargain ones are cheap for a reason!! I have had experience with the bargain sets ( $19.95)on a small block Ford engine and I got what I paid for.....CRAP!! got a cheap lesson though!!!! As they say " a ounce of precaution is worth a pound of cure".......Good Luck.....
