Yeah you need a higher quality puller it seems.

You need a puller like this. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=37824

Step 1: Tighten the center bolt and hit it with a hammer a couple of times.

Step 2: Repete step one over and over until removed.

Three jaw pullers will not work because they do not pull even.

Ted,

With the puller you mentioned do I just use the center bolt into the crank or do I need to bolt it to the stub also?

thanks

Never managed to break a puller. From the chepo imports to whatever Autozone has in the "Loan a tool" bin. Now the bolts that thread into the balancer are another story. The tend to be crap and bend or break. Jut but some good ones and some good washers.

3-jaw sounds like a gear puller not a balancer puller though.
Bad idea there.
Use the correct tool

I always called it the hub.

You use two bolts threaded in the hub holes that holds on the crank pulley. The center bolt has a v-shape end that goes against the center treated crank hole but not inside of it.

Once you get the puller you will see. Great for steering wheels also.

Worked every time for me STDog, took off quite a few and never broke the puller. Just have to hit it with the hammer to remove the tension.

You described a balancer puller though.

Gear pullers have jaws, that reach to the back of the gear to hold it.

The balancer puller is flat with slots for bolt to thread into the balancer.

I've never broken a balancer puller. Just bent the bolts/heads on the cheap ones, but if I'd used the hammer trick it probably wouldn't habe happened. I'll remember it for next time :)

I use a harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller.

I was able to pull mine with a 3 jaw gear puller, a nice one. The only catch was i had to use an impact  She came right off though.
