I have a 1973 472 and I want to build it to factory 1970 500 specs. So my questions are:

How do you identify the 1968-69 472 heads?
How do you identify the 1970 500 heads?
What is the combustion chamber cc in 472 and 500 1968-1973? (I hear 76cc and 120cc thrown around a lot but dont know which goes to what...)

To build a 1970 spec motor, I understand I would need to change the heads, crank (need a 500 crank) and pistons. connecting rods too? cam. Anything else? Thanks

68-73 all had the small chamber heads, that would be the 76cc ones. 74-76 had the 120 cc ones. That was the same for both engines. The 425s went inbetween from 77-79 with 90cc chambers.
472-500 is only a matter of pistons and crank being changed. The 500 rods are a little beefier, but if you only floor it every once and a while, it should fine. If you would rather be safe about it, then I would change the rods over too, other wise they have the length rod.
If you want get fance, you can change the cam, the MTS#5 sais it is close to 73 specs, but you should go new at least stock for now. You wouldnt want to bend that Beatel into a pretzal now.
Everything seems to be in order, sounds like a graet project.

I plan on using a performance cam and doing some other performance mods, like custom headers, edel. intake.... . I figured its better to start with a minimum of 400 horse rather than 345 8) thanks for the info!
