Hello all, I picked up a 368 today for parts. I want to know if I can use the oil pan off of this engine on my 500. I have heard some say you cannot because the crank won't clear. I have NO idea what the engine is out of, I just know it is a 368. The pan that is on the engine looks identical to a 425 rear wheel drive pan. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Danillac in Missouri

If it the steel pan, you might have some options. If it the plastic one, I'd say no way.

The rod nuts will hit the shallow section in the front, but you can add clearance there. It'll just take some trial and error to make room. I'd apply blue to the inside of the pan, and assemble it without the gasket. Rotate the the crank with the rods and pistons a few time to mark the area that needs clearance. Then you can pound it out a bit with a hammer.

You probably will need the 425 pickup tube though. I think the 369 tube is smaller in diameter, and won't fit the block.

Yes, the rear sump 368 pan will work on your 500 without any clearancing. I know because I've done it. However, you will need an oil pick up tube from a 70 to 76 Eldo as the 368 tube will not bolt up to the 500 block.

Danillac,

I ASSume that you have the '80-'82 ish rwd mid sump 368 pan. The 368 mid sump rwd pan is same as 425 mid sump rwd, afaik.

The 70-76 eldo pu tube will not work with the mid sump pans, *afaik*. It goes to far rearward. They are no longer made anyway [have any? I'll buy]. The 70-76 eldo pu tube *may* work with the odd welded sump fwd 368 pan, but I don't know.

The '77-'79 425 rwd car pu tube will work with the 363 mid sump pan. The '77-'79 rwd pu tube is still made by melling. Sold through many sources. Most any parts store.

Check clearance to rod bolts in front, as others have said. Peen as needed.
Dave

I know it's been over 5 years , but I used a 368 pan and pick-up on my 472.. If I remember right I had to drill a new hole in the tab or metal strip that bolts to the main with the stud...
