Been doing research on the starters for the 500 Pacer,,, MTS says use BB chevy and shim up to 1/4 if needed. Any body have experience on a purchase ,, type/kind ,ratio, number of teeth vs OEM teeth, I see them from $99 to $265.?
I need one that withstands high under hood temps and ratio of at least 3.7. remember we're dealing with a low buck fun ride.. Ha!....

Fun, low buck ride?
Why not the stock starter then.

What the high underhood temps from? just the 500 or something to make it hotter?

I don't see a need for a high torque unit.

cadipacer,
I have never had any cranking problems, even on that hot ass, overheating, POS in our tow truck. I just get the high torque starter from CSK (lifetime warranty). Now, keeping batteries from cooking...that's another story!

Thanks DOC for the info,,, I will check CSK about application and price,,
The other question:why so much heat,, due to cramp conditions and lack of air flow-movement under hood, evenrthing gets heat soaked ,, the exhaust is close too also even wrapped. While the 500 does run cooler internally now that I tweaked the thermo for more volume,, it still presents a heat soak condition. I think the damage was done on the starter all this summer when the 500 was sometimes going from 205 -225*, so this is just insurance for the future..
This is one area you have to fix right or the problem remains!!!!!!!!

I replaced my sick oem with a chevy csi platinum. I used the spacer but didnt have to use any shims. The solenoid is very close to the headers but i have not experienced any problems yet. Its possible to mount it upside down with a longer battery cable.
