IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONVERT ONE OF THESE ENGINES TO CARB WITHOUT PULLING THE HEAD? I HAVE A CARB INTAKE AND WNT TO DIABLE THE VARABLE DISPLASMENT SOLENIODS. tHANKS IN ADVANCE.

Ya you can unplug a wire that goes to the transmission. It signals to the computer when the transmission is in 3rd gear. If you disconnect that wire it will stay in v8 mode all the time. Its actually a pretty good system. What you should do is just rig up the solenoids on a switch so when your on the highway you can kick it into v4 to save some gas. Why don't you like the variable displacement? Just curious. It's funny because I've been reading all of these threads about converting to V8-6-4 and you want to get away from it. Interesting.

Duck,
Why would you want to disable it? Please read my reply in "8-6-4 Seleniods not a bolt in...".
There seems to be a misconception that either/both the TH400 has a third gear switch or the MD (modulated displacement) system gets a signal from a third gear switch. The switch is the A.D.L, or "Drive" switch and it is not located on the transmission. It closes (completes the current path) to allow power from the "Body" fuse in the fuse box to travel from it through the switch to the ECM. This is one of the requirements for the system to go into MD (consequently, a blown body fuse, which also affects things such as interior lights, would also mean MD would not function).
The easiest way to disable the system is to simply disconnect the switch from the circuit by removing the connector on it. Installing a toggle switch between the fuse box and switch would be better as it would allow you to disable the system at will. Tap into the wire going from the switch to the fuse box (orange wire on switch connector). The switch is located on the lower end of the steering column. Look for a connector with two wires; a orange (ORN) wire and a black wire with a white tracer (BLD/WHT). This way, you can disable the system at will, and not just permanently.
