hello all, i was very surprised when i found this site, i never imagined there was this many people running these motors. i just picked up a all original 500 with only 56,000 miles on it and im in the process of putting down in my 85 c10. i have a couple of questions, what kind of gearing would work best with this motor, i know they dont like big rpms. i was thinking of going with a set of 4.10s has any body had problems running that kind of gear. second question, what size carbs work well on this motor, i have a 1050 dominator i was going to put on. the main purpose of this truck is drag racing. i want to see what kinds of time i will post with just a few simple bolt on items, then go from there. thanks in advance for any help.

What size tire are you running? I think 4.10 is a little too low unless you run a tall tire. I ran 3.54's in my Dodge PU with a 33 inch tall tire and it was just about right in street trim. Unles you do some intake and head mods that 1050 is way too much. The factor QJ is 800 cfm and works well. As you have heard these Cads do not like rpm higher than 4200 to 4500 in stock form and they produce gobs of torque from off idle up. I would suggest putting it in stock and make changes later as needed.
By the way welcome, and have fun.

slowc10,

4.10-1s are way too deep. In stock form, expect it to e.t. best shifting at 4400 or so. Near stock, with a mild cam and good valve springs, still don't expect it to pull past 4800. Unless you build a balls to the walls engine with pro ported heads, big cam and some compression, the 1050 is also overkill.

Fyi - I had a 4680 lbs chev C-20 with a near stock 500. Stock cam, well ported early 70s stock intake w/a 1" spacer, 1.875" headers, big Q-J. It ran best [14.6] shifting at 4400. It had 7.50 x 16 tires [30"] and was geared way too deep with 4.11s. It was done well before the speed traps. It would have probably e.t.'d better with 3.55-1s.
