I am wanting to convert a 472 to a 500. I saw a used 500 crank on ebay for $125. Does this sound like a good price or will it be worth the time and money I would spend at the machine shop to buy one already ground and ready to install. I have seen a crank from another store on ebay for $277. What do you guys think?

I've seen some negative comments about the place that sells those cranks for $125. Place in Texas as I remember. If you're close to them it wouldn't be too bad if the crank is std and the thrust is ok.

Don't even have to ask, I'll bet its B&M engine isn't it? It's pretty much takeing a chance when buying from these guys.

BigJohn,

If it's a good std crank, it's a real good deal, imo. If it needs to go .010"/010", it's a so so deal.

Beware crank "kits" from re-build houses. They are often cranks that have been hurt bad, and welded back up. Welding is a bad thing on a non-forged crank, imo. Look for stress cracks.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the RE. It is B&M engine supply that I saw the crank. After what ya'll have said, I think I will pass on it. If the company was closer so that I could inspect it, it might be a really good deal. I also cannot get an email reply about questions that I have asked about the crank, such as condition, shipping costs, casting numbers etc. So since they cannot give me any info, I will not be purchasing.

Thanks,
Big John

Just a note on B&M.

Bought a short block from t6hem, and had the moving assembly shipped with out the actuual block. Took a long time for it to ship, but It did arrive OK.

Only problem I had is the crank was ground 10/10 and wasn't marked. Stupid me didn't measuer/check first and wasted a set of rod and main bearings.

Everything else has seamed OK, so far.

Still trying to sell the pistons and rods. Anyone ned a set from a 1974 472?

They are actually able to weld the cranks back together? Seems like they would crack pretty easy again huh? That must be a bitch to rebalance. You think they would tell you if you asked them? Worth a shot.

If it spun a bearing and the journal is too far gone sometimes they will build a weld up on the bad journal. Common on steel cranks but don't think is recommended on an iron crank.
