i just finished putting the 500 in my truck and got it running. my question is how can i determine the exact year of the motor. when i got it from a friend he said it was a 69-70 he was not sure which. it has a egr valve on the back side of the intake. i dont have any experiance with these motors, i needed a motor for my truck and he had this one, and it was running. i dont think i made out to bad since i only paid 150 bucks for it. thanks in advance for any help.

casting numbers on the heads are a way. Need to remove valve cover to find number

If it's gant an EGR valve, 'll bet it noeither year. As far as I know 68-72 engines (both 472 and 500) were EGR free. Never seen and engine from those years with and EGR intake. I don't know when the EGR started though. Someone else might.

As to year, it's not easy. The heads can help, so can the pistons, but you have to remove the heads too see them:( It doesn't really matter much, they are all interchangable. Yeah, the compression was lowered, but that's not a big deal and can be fixed later with different pistons when you decide to rebuild it. Same for the cam.

It could be a 10:1 engine with a later intake too. Too many variables to tell. HEI could have been added as well.

BTW, good deal on the motor.

I would say the best way to determine what year it is would be to look at the pistons, if you feel like going to that effort. It's probably a 75-76 though if that EGR intake is the stocker.

Tom,
As others have said, the egr says '73 or later.

Pull a valve cover and find the casting number there.

Measure the stroke through a plug hole to see if it's a 500 for sure. Pull all plugs to make it easy to turn. Measure with a wire through the plug hole at top and bottom of stroke. A 500" will measure apx 4 & 5/16". A 425 or 472 will measure apx 4 & 1/16".
