The hub from my crank has a groove worn into it so I was thinking about putting a speedi sleeve on it. Napa has them for 10 bucks and my machine shop has them for like 8 bucks. So I talked to them and was going to have them install it. They said they looked at it and saw that the seal still fit tight even though there was a groove in the hub. They said its best not to use a speedi sleeve because the diameter becomes bigger and burns out the seal faster. Is this true? Have any of you guys ran into this situation before? I thought I heard somewhere that the groove would wear the seal out is this true? What do you guys think I should do put the speedi sleeve on or run it without one? Or are there any other options? This motor is going to be a daily driver and I would hate for it to leak. Thanks - Justin

I've not had any trouble with sleeves and seal wear, but the most miles I've ever put on a sleeved hub was about 12,000. It could be different in real world testing, too because my sleeve is on a 454 balancer.

I might try assembling it with the groove. The worst thing that might happen is it will leak and you can pull the hub and sleeve it.

Another thing you can do is have the hub turned down and then sleeved back to factory spec. It would be more expensive, but it would really solve the problem

or you could install the seal so it doesnt ride in the groove. leave it out about 1/8"

Most speedy sleeves seal good not because they increase the diameter, but because they provide a nice surface. A crank polisher can put on a very nice polished surface even with a groove worn in and get away without a sleeve.
